Our family friendly welcome to the New Year occurs tonight at 6pm when our Ski School and Ski Patrol put on a free Torchlight parade down Valley and Smokey. The best viewing area is at the bottom of the Green lift, the weather looks ideal and we hope you can join us as we welcome in 2016. There is no night skiing tonight which resumes tomorrow night from 6 to 10pm.
At least 30 slopes are open today as almost all of Nub’s Nob South and the Orange and Brown chairs are operating! A Herculean effort by the most award winning Snow Crew in the Midwest coupled with 9″ of help by Mother Nature two days ago really jumps up our slope count as we move closer to the New Year. Enjoy!
SNOW! Nub’s Nob was blanketed with 9” of snow overnight and our world-class snow Crew was hard at it all night. 4 more runs opened today along with another chairlift and at least 6 runs on Nub’s South and the Orange chair will open tomorrow by noon! YAHOO!
The coldest night of the year so far enabled us to really crank out the snow overnight! Not only did we make great progress on the slopes we are getting ready to open later this week, we also laid down a layer of silk on most of the runs we have open today giving us markedly improved conditions from the last few days. We expect to open a few more runs and another chairlift tomorrow and a few runs on Nub’s South by Wednesday. In addition Mother Nature is forecast to drop 4″ to 6″ of snow on us starting later today. Stay tuned!
Already offering the most open slopes and chairlifts by far in the lower penninsula, the most award winning Snow Crew in the Midwest is back to work as the coldest air of the season so far enabled us to resume snowmaking just before noon today. If the weather forecast holds true we’ll be able to add more slopes and lifts by midweek including a few on Nub’s South AND lay down some of our patented silk on the existing slopes overnight! YAHOO!
The lifts are now turning daily until the end of the ski season from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Holiday night skiing begins Saturday, December 26 from 6 to 10 p.m. The world-class Nub’s snow Crew will shut down the lifts and re-groom the slopes from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. to create the best possible night skiing conditions. Holiday night skiing is every night from Dec. 26 thru Jan. 2 with the exception of New Years Eve.
Many thanks to the hard working crews from Great Lakes Energy for getting us back online following a massive wind storm. Two lifts are turning today from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. serving 7 slopes. Lift tickets are at a special rate of just $25 for the rest of the day. We will be open starting tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and night skiing also begins tomorrow from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
In spite of this less than winter like weather the most award wining snowmaking and grooming Crew in the Midwest are opening another slope today as Race Arena makes its’ season debut. This brings our slope count up to 8 with more yet to come. YAHOO! Keep the faith as our weather guru is seeing some snowmaking temperatures arriving right after Christmas and you can bet we’ll be hard at it.
Our slope total grows to 8 tomorrow as Race Arena opens at 9am! Almost all of the front is now open and we’ll be adding to the total again as the week goes on. Pat one of our World Class Snowmakers on the back when you see them as they have been working overtime this year.
Our world class Snow Crew pulled off the impossible and turned Nub’s from green to white in 2.5 days of high pressure snowmaking. Conditions today are spectacular and smiles are everywhere. We’ll be opening at least 3 more slopes tomorrow and will add to that total later in the week. YAHOO!
Mother Nature finally showed us some love with 6″ of natural snow and 2 solid days of snowmaking. The most award winning snow crew in the Midwest took advantage of every minute and we will be skiing and riding on 4 slopes with two lifts from 9 till 4:30pm tomorrow. YAHOO! We’ll be open every day from here on out and also be adding more slopes this week so stay tuned!
It’s been 19 days since we heard the sweet sound of snow guns purring but that sound is back as cold air has finally returned to the North. The most award winning Snow Crew in the Midwest started cranking out the white stuff at 4pm this afternoon and we are going at it as hard as we know how. The forecast calls for steady snowmaking straight thru Sunday morning when we hope to open with 3 or 4 slopes. Stay tuned and YAHOO!
El Nino is really making a house call this December and it has been warm and wet in Northern Michigan this week. Our base has dwindled significantly under this two pronged assault and that’s bad. The good news is cooler air is forecast to arrive Thursday night allowing us to make snow through Sunday morning. Our plan, and this is always subject to weather, is to open for the season on Sunday, December 20 on at least 3 to 4 slopes and open more just as soon as we can make more snow.
With temperatures in the mid-50’s and rain it is difficult to believe this is December 14. Despite the weather today there is some good news. Seasonable temperatures are forecasted to return later this week. The Midwest’s most award-winning Snow Crew is eager to turn on the snow guns. We will continue to update this blog and our conditions page to inform you of their progress. Give us a hand and THINK SNOW!
Working with Mother Nature is never dull. She was kind to us earlier this season, allowing us to be the only ski area in the Lower Peninsula open all of Thanksgiving Weekend and we were open the following weekend as well. Thursday night things changed with temperatures in the 50’s, rain and winds gusting 30 to 40 mph from the southwest which really melted the snowpack. This loss of snow depth will not allow us to safely open the slopes this weekend (December 12 & 13).
The office, general store and tune center are open everyday, with the exception of Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is a great time to process season passes, take care of Christmas shopping and get your skis tuned.
Our award-winning Snow Crew is watching the forecast and looking forward to cooling temperatures. Give us a hand and please, THINK SNOW!
Thank-you for another great weekend at Nub’s Nob. We had 5 runs and 2 lifts open, the sun was out and it felt like spring. The photo below was taken at 6a.m. on Sunday morning
Last night at midnight the most award-winning snow Crew in the Midwest fired up the Nub’s Nob snow guns for the first time this season. YAHOO! We were able to run till 6am when we discovered a leak in the main water line forcing us to shut down. Temp’s were warming up anyway so little time was lost as high’s today are forecast to be in the mid 30’s. It sure felt good to see the system up and running and snow in front of each gun!
We are already repairing the pipe and hope to be back on sometime this evening when temperatures fall below freezing for another night run. You know we’ll take every opportunity we have to make snow as weather allows. Stay tuned and THINK SNOW!
Despite a very warm November it does look like there is snowmaking weather on the horizon. The current forecast is for night time temperatures to dip below freezing this weekend. Rest assured that we are ready to turn on the guns and take advantage of every opportunity to make snow. Typically we need about 72 hours of running our snow guns to be able to open. Give the Nub’s Crew a hand and THINK SNOW!

At 83 years old Larry Tomie of Sault Ste. Marie, ON is still buckling his race boots and competing at the highest level available to his age group. This summer Larry flew to Chile to compete along side of 180 athletes from 17 nations. Larry had 18 others skiing in his age group. The international competition featured a 62 gate slalom course, a Super G and two GS courses. Larry was first place in every discipline earning the overall Gold Medal. Larry will continue competition this winter traveling to Aspen and France for the World Championships.
Off the slopes Larry experienced an earthquake measuring 8.3 on the richter scale while in Chile. He admitted this is not something he hopes to do again. The quake shook the hotel and caused massive destruction in the area where he was staying.
Larry can be spotted at Nub’s Nob on a weekly basis in the winter and is a regular on the Blue Lift. When asked about why he considers Nub’s Nob his home ski area his answer was simple, “the people”. All of us at Nub’s Nob wish Larry the best in all of his racing endeavors this winter. If you see him on the hill this season tell him congratulations, that is if you can catch him.
The Nub’s Crew just completed load testing all of our chairlifts. In a load test buckets of water are placed on the chairs to simulate a fully loaded lift. With the lift loaded we test the brakes, safety circuits, and auxiliary power. The State of Michigan requires a load test once every five years, but at Nub’s Nob we test every lift every year. Chairlift safety is taken very seriously here, and you can rest assured that we are doing everything possible to make your trip uphill as safe and enjoyable as possible.
We now have expanded office hours. Stop by the Front Desk from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday to purchase your season pass and ski locker renewal or with any other questions regarding the ski season.
