At 83 years old Larry Tomie of Sault Ste. Marie, ON is still buckling his race boots and competing at the highest level available to his age group. This summer Larry flew to Chile to compete along side of 180 athletes from 17 nations. Larry had 18 others skiing in his age group. The international competition featured a 62 gate slalom course, a Super G and two GS courses. Larry was first place in every discipline earning the overall Gold Medal. Larry will continue competition this winter traveling to Aspen and France for the World Championships.
Off the slopes Larry experienced an earthquake measuring 8.3 on the richter scale while in Chile. He admitted this is not something he hopes to do again. The quake shook the hotel and caused massive destruction in the area where he was staying.
Larry can be spotted at Nub’s Nob on a weekly basis in the winter and is a regular on the Blue Lift. When asked about why he considers Nub’s Nob his home ski area his answer was simple, “the people”. All of us at Nub’s Nob wish Larry the best in all of his racing endeavors this winter. If you see him on the hill this season tell him congratulations, that is if you can catch him.
