History of Nub's Nob

1957
Dorie and Nub Sarns first view the hill that will become Nub's Nob from a neighboring
vantage point.

1957
Tree cutting, lodge building and chairlift installing begin on the property.

1958
It finally snows and Nub's Nob opens to skiers around the first of the year. A one-day weekend lift ticket for the chairlift is $5. Season Passes are $20 for individuals, $50 for families.  There are 3 slopes and a 65 seat chairlift.

1959
Old Smokey, Scarface, The Chute, NW Passage (now Sno Pro) and The Valley are
added. Juilleret's Restaurant becomes the in-lodge eatery.

1960
The Pomalift is added in Dories Bowl. There is a full size Olympic swimming pool and a
bunkhouse for male guests added. A weekend one day lift ticket is still $5.

1961
A second double chairlift is opened to the summit. Slope totals are now over 10 and
the rope tow area is doubled in size.

1964
"Crazy Otto" slope opens and is named after long time maintenance man and groomer Otto Washburn.

1969
The front slopes of Nub's Nob are now nearly complete as you see them today. The Dorie's Double Chair replaces the Poma lift which is moved across the resort to "Mr. Charlie".

1970
A new Pomalift was installed on the west side of Mr. Charlie.

1972
"Crazy Otto" drives the snowcat, Wanda Davert works in the office while Dorie Sarns runs the resort with her big dogs by her side.

1974
Jack Frank and friends start The Ski Academy.

1977
The Pleasantview Ski Corp. (Walter and Alfred Fisher) purchase the area from Dorie Sarns.

1977
Legendary snowmaker Jim Dilworth joins Nub's Nob as General Manager. Jim Bartlett joins him as Area Manager.  The area has 14 slopes, 15 air/water duckbill snowguns and 4 chairlifts.

1978
16 slopes and 4 chairlifts greet skiers.  Research and development of the Nub's Nob snowmaking gun begins.

1979
Nub's Nob South and the Orange chairlift open. 5 runs are added. Adult daily lift tickets are $13.  Research and development of the Nub's Nob snowmaking gun continues.

1981
There are now 21 slopes and 5 chairlifts. A ski school one hour private lesson is $20.  Research and development of the Nub's Nob snowmaking gun continues

1985
Nub's Nob awarded a patent for the invention of the Nub's Nob snowmaking gun.  10 guns are now in use on the slopes.

1987
Northwest Passage gets bulldozed to create Sno Pro named for the late Jim Dilworth. Stepping into Dilly's big shoes, Jim Bartlett is named General Manager.  The lodge has a big lobby expansion and 4 more patented Nub's Nob snow guns go to work.

1989
The old yellow double chair comes down and up goes the yellow triple seat chairlift.  Moved from between Scarface and Chute, the new yellow speeds skiers up the hill between Chute and the Twilight Zone. Chute gets 8 new powerful tower snow guns. A new groomer is added to the fleet. For growing families the nursery is doubled in size.

1990
The old restaurant gives way to a huge new Cafeteria. 10 more snowguns sprout on the
hill and the rental area expands.

1991
Another new chairlift as the Brown triple chair climbs Nub's Nob South! The Bayview and
Dogleg slopes open. 11 Nub's Nob snow guns are added to the arsenal.

1992
The Big Time beginners area debuts with it's own handle tow. 28 snow guns are built by
the crew, the largest snowmaking expansion to date. The new entrance road with it's
rock and beam sign brings customers to a greatly expanded parking area. Weekend and
holiday one day tickets are now $34 for adults.

1993
Nub's Nob is voted "Midwest's Best Snow" for the very first time (we've owned the title
since). The old Dories Blue double chairlift is replaced by today's big Red 4 passenger
beauty. While the crew is putting up the Red Chair they completely rebuild the Revelry and Dories Bowl slopes.

1995
The first tree covered "gladed" slope in Michigan opens on Nub's Nob South, the
Southern Comfort Glade. The new locker room debuts just one step off "The Midwest's Best Snow" at the base of Big Time. The first steps are taken for Pintail Peak as Nub's Nob swaps land with the State of Michigan. The former State property touches Nub's Nob South and work begins in earnest for a huge expansion.  Day lodge undergoes major expansion and renovation.

1996
The big Green quad chairlift gets a facelift with all new chairs, a new drive and hydraulic tensioning. Another new groomer lands in the hand's of the best snow crew anywhere. 6 more snow guns come out of
garage and the Southern Comfort Glade is expanded. The chainsaws begin logging out Pintail Peak.  Awarded #1 Day Ski Resort in the Midwest by Ski Magazine.  Last season's day lodge expansion wins the Snow Country Magazine Ski Area Design national award.

1997
It will be heralded by the winter press as "Michigan's best trail expansion in 10 years".
Pintail Peak opens with it's Black quad chair and 12 slopes. 15 more snow guns insure that Pintail will be covered with more of the "Midwest's Best". Snowboarders watch a total
reshaping of the halfpipe. Both the locker room and the adjoining parking area expand.

1998
40 years of family fun are celebrated with the anniversary opening of the new slope Big 4-0. Nub's Nob South also adds night skiing expanding evening offerings by almost double. The "Pipe Dragon" halfpipe groomer shows up and carves the snow into perfect walls in the Terrain Park.  Ski Magazine ranks Nub's the #1 day ski area in the Midwest.

1999
The Rental building expands to it's current size. The little kids let the crew open their secret runs Foo Land & Foo Foo Land. The runs have been named by young ski school students.  Ski Magazine ranks Nub's the #1 day ski area in the Midwest again.

2000
Another first, a double black diamond slope opens. It's The Powerline Glade. 12 more snow guns means we've added 28 guns in just 3 seasons!  Ranked #6 in North America for snow grooming and awarded 2 Gold Medals for excellence in Snow Grooming and Family Programs by Ski Magazine.  These awards are the first ever for a Midwestern resort in a national competition.

2001
15 more snow guns are built.  For the first time Nub's is the #1 NASTAR resort in the Midwest.  Ski Magazine ranks Nub's #1 overall in the Midwest for the first time.

2002
The Orange lift gets a facelift and another 20 snowguns are added to the fleet. Ski Magazine ranks Nub's #1 overall in the Midwest and awards three gold medals to us in the national ranking for snow, grooming and service.  This is the 2nd time any midwestern resort has been ranked nationally among the biggest resorts in the country and both times it was Nub's.  Parents Magazine features Nub's Nob as the only Midwestern resort in their November issue "Great Family Ski Vacations."

2003
New Pintail Peak Warming House opens! The locker room and parking lot are both expanded again. 2 dozen more patented snow guns are installed.  Nub's awarded the Most Family Friendly Resort in the Midwest by Parent's Magazine.  Detroit News awards Nub's "Michigan's Best Ski Resort".  Ski Magazine ranks Nub's #1 overall in the Midwest for the third time - something no other Midwestern resort has ever done.

2004
Lookout X Games, the first Superpipe in the Midwest is sculpted from the woods near the top of Big Time. This monster halfpipe is world class in size and pitch and raises the performance bar for snowboarders and twin tip freestyle skiers. Slopes now total 49 and snowguns 223!  Ski Magazine ranks Nub's #1 in the Midwest for snow, grooming, service and value.

2005
3 more gladed runs open on our 3rd peak as the Tower Glades come on line.  Slopes now total 52.  Michigan's only Winch Cat slope groomer raises the snow quality bar another notch.  4 more patented Nub's Nob snowmaking guns are added to the fleet bring our total to 227.  Free wireless internet access is now available in the lobby.  The Detroit News readers poll once again votes Nub's "Michigan's Best Ski Resort."

2006
2 new gladed runs open as T4 joins its brothers on the Tower Glades and the woods south of Bayview are opened up.  Whitefish trail on Pintail Peak gets a major remodeling and a line of permanent snowguns on the north side opening up more stunning views of Little Traverse Bay.  15 more patented Nub's Nob snowmaking guns are added to the fleet bring our total to 242. 

2007
Thanks to you and all our customers it's HAPPY 50th ANNIVERSARY as we celebrate 50 years of great snow and great times.  The improvements never stop as over the summer we added another gladed ski run in the Arena Glade area, expanded the Goose Bumps trail on Pintail Peak, built 8 more patented Nub's Nob Snowguns giving us a total of 250, added 2 new Pisten Bully grooming machines to the fleet, introduced new night skiing hours and the Freedom 4 hour ticket and completely replaced our rental equipment fleet with new skis from Rossignol and boots from Nordica.  Whew!  Our biggest award yet arrives with the 2007 Ski Magazine Reader Survey voting Nub's terrain park #1 and our slope grooming expertise #4 in all of North America.  This is the third time Nub's has won a national award and we remain the only Midwest area to make the cut ever.

2008
The Crew has another big summer of construction projects as a new triple chair is erected on Pintail Peak and 12 more patented Nub's Nob snowguns are added to the fleet bringing our total to 262.   Oakland Press awards Nub's "Michigan's Best Ski Resort".

2009
Transworld Snowboarding Magazine subscribers chose our award winning Superpipe as one of the "Top 5 East Coast Pipes."  The magazine's reader rankings places Nub's Nob in the elite of all US resorts east of the Rockies and as the only Midwest resort rated by the worldwide publication.

NM3 Magazine rates all the Michigan ski areas.  Nub's voted #1 in the following categories:  Best Snow, Best Grooming, Toughest Groomed Terrain, Toughest Bumps, Best Half Pipe. 

2010

8 more patented Nub's Nob snowguns are added to the fleet bring our total to 270.  The Superpipe is retired and a new Race Arena takes its place.  The halfpipe in the Terrain Park is lengthened and upgraded with higher walls while more jibs are added to the park.  Another new Pisten Bully snowgroomer is added to the fleet.  Scott Stillings retires as Winter Sports School Director after 10 years at the helm, Rebecca Behm steps into Scott's shoes.

2011

12 more patented Nub's Nob snowguns are added to the fleet bringing our total to 282.  We upgrade 100% of our rental ski fleet with 1100 new Rossignol rockered skis with Marker bindings.  All new Nordica boots are purchased for the rental fleet also.  The new "rockered " Experience 74 ski from Rossignol represents the latest technology in ski equipment which translates into easier turning and better edge hold.  A 60 acre land swap with the State of Michigan is completed during the summer expanding our property to the NE.  This land offers opportunities for expansion of both XC and downhill trails in the future.  Terrain park voted #1 in Michigan and in the top 3 Parks in the Midwest by the readers of Transworld Snowboarding magazine.

2012

In our never ending quest for the best snow possible we purchased another new snow grooming machine manufactured by Pisten Bully. Using the best design and engineering in the business, our fleet of these incredible machines allow our award winning crew of experienced groomers to continue producing the best ski and snowboard surfaces possible.

Continuing our tradition of the "Midwest's Best Snow!" we once again expanded our world class snowmaking system as we made some significant changes in our distribution infrastructure and added 6 guns to the Easy Mile slope.  This system, in the hands of the Midwest’s most decorated and experienced snowmaking and grooming team, was once again unmatched in delivering the best conditions possible last season.

We created another “just for kids” trail on Nub’s Nob South.  Panda Land is designed to entertain the young ones with statues of local animals while they learn to turn and stop when moving from statue to statue.  The little ones will have a blast here!

Finally, Outside Magazine picked the Nub's Terrain Parks as the Best in the Midwest.  They noted the incredible variety of features, the quality of the riders here and the expertise and creativity of the Park Crew.

2013

You guessed it - we purchased another new snow grooming machine manufactured by Pisten Bully. Using the best design and engineering in the business, our fleet of these incredible machines allow our award winning crew of experienced groomers to continue producing the best ski and snowboard surfaces possible.

After 13 years of great service, we retired our first automated tuning machine and replaced it with a new fully automated WINTERSTEIGER Mercury model.  This new machine represents the latest ski and snowboard tuning technology in the world and is capable of stone grinding, sharpening, and polishing your gear to world-class precision no matter what ski or snowboard you use.

Our National Ski Patrol is named the #1 Large Patrol in the nation!  Our hats are off to this hard working group of volunteer men and women.

The awards continue to pile up. Outside Magazine rates our terrain parks as tops in the Midwest and the locals vote Nub's the Best in the Northwest via the Petoskey News Review reader survey. 

2014

You guessed it again - after a record breaking winter for total snowfall, we built 10 more patented Nub's Nob snow guns bringing our fleet total to 292.  Our fleet of these incredible machines allow our award winning crew of experienced snowmakers and groomers to continue producing the best ski and snowboard surfaces possible.

Professioinal ski and snowboard tuner Pat Dueweke joins our staff and heads up the Tune and Demo Center.  Pat also has more experience than any one in the country with our WINTERSTEIGER Mercury model automated tuning machine.  In the hands of Pat and his well trained Crew, this machine represents the latest ski and snowboard tuning technology in the world and is capable of stone grinding, sharpening, and polishing your gear to world-class precision no matter what ski or snowboard you use.

The awards continue to pile up as the locals vote Nub's the Best in the Northwest via the Petoskey News Review reader survey.
